Giving with Intention: Sacrificial Not Ceremonial

Pastor Joshua speaks on the importance of not just giving for the sake of checking off the box, but to be invested in giving something that costs you something, because the Lord is sacrificial. What you get is amounted to what is in your heart.

2 Samuel 24:18-25 New Living Translation
18 That day Gad came to David and said to him, “Go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.” 19 So David went up to do what the Lord had commanded him. 20 When Araunah saw the king and his men coming toward him, he came and bowed before the king with his face to the ground. 21 “Why have you come, my lord the king?” Araunah asked. David replied, “I have come to buy your threshing floor and to build an altar to the Lord there, so that he will stop the plague.” 22 “Take it, my lord the king, and use it as you wish,” Araunah said to David. “Here are oxen for the burnt offering, and you can use the threshing boards and ox yokes for wood to build a fire on the altar. 23 I will give it all to you, Your Majesty, and may the Lord your God accept your sacrifice.” 24 But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on buying it, for I will not present burnt offerings to the Lord my God that have cost
me nothing.” So David paid him fifty pieces of silver for the threshing floor and the oxen. 25 David built an altar there to the Lord and sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings. And the Lord answered his prayer for the land, and the plague on Israel was stopped.

Principle: Ceremony looks great, but it bears no fruit.

Principle: It’s got to cost me something, if it’s going to mean something.

Luke 21:1-4 New Living Translation
21 While Jesus was in the Temple, he watched the rich people dropping their gifts in the collection box. 2 Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two small coins. 3 “I tell you the truth,” Jesus said, “this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them. 4 For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.”

Principle: A sacrificial gift will catch the Lord’s attention.

Principle: God always uses a sacrifice to unlock blessings.

Philippians 4:19 King James Version
19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:15-19 New Living Translation
15 As you know, you Philippians were the only ones who gave me financial help when I first brought you the Good News and then traveled on from Macedonia. No other church did this. 16 Even when I was in Thessalonica you sent help more than once. 17 I don’t say this because I want a gift from you. Rather, I want you to receive a reward for your kindness. 18 At the moment I have all I need—and more! I am generously supplied with the gifts you sent me with Epaphroditus. They are a sweet-smelling sacrifice that is acceptable and pleasing to God. 19 And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

Principle: God does not want to get something from you. God wants to get something to you.

Principle: The outflow of the sacrificial giving was that God would supply all their needs.

Genesis 8:22 New Living Translation
22 As long as the earth remains, there will be planting and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night.”
