Pastor Joshua talks about the gift and person of the Holy Spirit.
SERMON NOTES:
The Advocate
Intro:
John 14:27 New Living Translation
I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
John 14:25-26 New Living Translation
25 I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. 26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.
Advocate:
Advocate
1: one who defends or maintains a cause or proposal
2: one who supports or promotes the interests of a cause or group
3: one who pleads the cause of another
Principle: The Holy Spirit is here to defend and maintain the cause of Christ.
Never Alone:
Principle: Jesus did not leave us alone.
Deuteronomy 31:8 New Living Translation
Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”
Principle: The Holy Spirit, Our Advocate, keeps us connected.
Everything You Need:
Principle: You have everything that you need when you have The Advocate.
Acts 19:1-6 New Living Translation
19 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions until he reached Ephesus, on the coast, where he found several believers. 2 “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them.
“No,” they replied, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
3 “Then what baptism did you experience?” he asked.
And they replied, “The baptism of John.”
4 Paul said, “John’s baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus.”
5 As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all.
Why Do We NEED The Advocate?
John 14:25-26 New Living Translation
25 I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. 26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.
Principle: The Advocate will teach you everything and remind you of everything Jesus taught.
Principle: The Advocate helps us fulfill the mission that Jesus gave us.
Early Church Momentum:
Principle: The Advocate allows for countless people to be like Christ and do the works of Christ. This fulfills the Cause of Christ.
Conclusion:
John 16:5-7 New Living Translation
But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going. Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you. But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.”
