Pastor Keren talks about when self becomes a god.
SERMON NOTES:
No Other Gods part 4
The God of Self
Pride:
Proverbs 16: 18-19 New Living Translation
Pride goes before destruction and haughtiness before a fall.
Better to live humbly with the poor than to share plunder with the proud.
Priniciple: It takes the presence of humility to acknowledge pride.
Principle: Pride is always intertwined with insecurity.
Luke 18:9-14 New Living Translation
Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I Thank you, God, that I am not a sinner like everyone else. For I don’t cheat, I don’t sin, and I don’t commit adultery. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’
But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, “O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
Humility/False Humility
John 3:29-30 New Living Translation
It is the bridegroom who marries the bride, and the best man is simply glad to stand with him and hear his vows. Therefore, I am filled with joy at his success. He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.
Principle: There is no self promotion in humility.
1 Peter 5:5-7 New Living Translation
And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”[a]
6 So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. 7 Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.
Principle: Humility is something that is acquired through obedience to God’s Word.
Our Ultimate Example
Philippians 2:5-11 New Living Translation
You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. He did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.
Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Genesis 3:1-7 New Living Translation
The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?” Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied. “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’”
“You won’t die!” The serpent replied to the woman. “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”
The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and her ate it, too. At that moment their eyes were opened, and suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.
Proverbs 11:2 New Living Translation
Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.
